AUTOHELM 1000 INSTALLATION

I am trying to avoid to open a subject that has been ( should have been) discussed in the past, but I could not find it both in English and Swedish side.

I got an ancient autohelm 1000, I think it is from - pre-Raymarine times but it works. I have stuurautomaat on the fuse box and the cables, but I do not have the hole to place it. According to manual I need to place it on the starboard side ( thanks.... engine is there also ). I need to drill the deck. She is in original gelcoat on deck and hull. I do not have courage to drill her.

I appreciate if someone can send me pictures of an installed autopilot, at least I will have confidence about the location before drilling.

Helmstock has a lot of small holes on it, over it and under it. I believe they used to have some fixing system or extension... God knows what in last 40 years. I would like to see the shape and size of the tiller arm bracket, do I need pushrod extension? we have the giant covers under it...

parts are more expensive than the autohelm itself ...

Also according to what is seen on the photos to which Johan submitted the links, the mounting I have experienced is on the port side. Maybe there is a setting for this..?..

There is a possibility to change operating sense för port mounting.

Read pages 49-50 in the manual:

Reversing the operating sense
If necessary, reverse the operating sense can be reversed as follows:

1. Press -1 and +1 together for 5 seconds.
2. The display shows the new operating sense (port or starboard) for 5 seconds,
and then the autopilot reverts to normal operation.

Thanks for the links of the pictures. at least I know what to get know. Also I checked the other pictures, inner layout of this IF-E is exactly the same with my IF, now I have a good idea to remove the chemical toilet that stays under the bed

I really doubt if mine has the same function. the very old manual says;

Porthand mounting
In certain instances it may be more convenient to
mount the unit on the porthand side. The standard
unit is sensed to operate on the starboard side of
the tiller and where porthand mounting is required
a special porthand system must be ordered.

I should try above at the weekend and try to understand if it functions or not. it does not have display

See page 4, "Backbord montage" (Port mounting).
There should be an enclosed tool for moving the adjustment screw in clockwise direction.

If this is the user´s manual for your autopilot, make an OCR reading of the German text, for example by printing it and scan it again to pdf with text or to rtf. Then it can be translated to English by a web based translator.
